KAKA: All You Can Eat Sushi

Another week, another all you can eat restaurant. Plus, it was moving day so we deserved to eat a lot. My go-to AYCE sushi is New Generation in Korean town. But it’s time to try on a new place and I don’t even remember the last time I had sushi because my partner is anti-sushi. I know right!? I can’t believe it either.

Anyways, the reason I was interested to try KAKA All You Can Eat is because they serve a variety of aburis sushi and tatakis. I checked some reviews on Yelp and they sounded promising. Btw, Kaka means poop in some languages like Arabic, Spanish, and Russian. There is even a dedicated article on Narcity Canada about the name of this restaurant.

Kaka has the most options so far, and they are unique as well, but unfortunately it didn’t win me over.

For you who's not familiar with Japanese culinary culture, tataki is a method where the meat/fish is briefly seared, thinly sliced, seasoned and marinated (optional). Out of all tatakis Kaka served, my favorite was Beef Tataki, served with spring mix, soy dressing, mayo, garlic chips, and crispy shallot. I didn't really like the rest of the tatakis because some of the elements didn't go well together, for example, Tai Carpaccio that was served with plum dressing and pomegranate pieces. Another thing I wish they had done is a smaller portion of tataki. Instead of giving us 5 slices per portion, they should have cut it down to 2-3 slices. I understand that it's an AYCE style where they want to make you full as soon as possible but would you rather waste the leftover if the customer doesn't like it?

Aburi Nigiri is basically nigiri sushi where the top side of meat/fish is slightly grilled or torched. Butterfish and duck aburi nigiri was quite delicious, and for the rest of the aburis, let's just say that I rather go with sashimi.
Top: Aburi Nigiri, Bottom: Sashimi

A fancy version of Aburi Nigiri: Aburi Oshi Nigiri. The only difference is that Aburi Oshi Nigiri is pressed into a 'box' shaped, often has some extra ingredients in the center part of sushi and served with sauce or mayo on top. Tbh, I don't know whether there is a purpose in pressing the sushi into a box or is it just for the presentation. I wasn't very impressed with these aburis, but you should try Salmon Oshi Nigiri (one that has jalapeno on top) for the experience.

I'm always excited to try on specialty rolls! Chef Franks Special was delicious. I love how they put scallop and tobiko on top of the rolls.

Delicious hot food! Especially short rib and chicken karaage.

On my way to pick up a free pint of Halo Top Canada!
